The Garden Stays are a favourite for Ren faire adventures and everyday whimsy. They’re an ideal base for a complete historical outfit or a modern formal ensemble. Dress them up or down and decorate to your heart’s content—ruffles look especially lovely with this piece!
Your first stays/corset can feel intimidating, but take it step by step. The bias binding is the most advanced step in this pattern. The quick unpick exists for a reason, it’s okay to make mistakes, we take a breath, unpick it and try again.
Take it one step at a time, know it might take a while, there’s a lot of repetition!
This is a really easy pattern to make reversible!
Just make sure your grommets look nice from both sides, and finish the bias tape with an invisible hand stitch- I like the ladder stitch.
Skill Level: Adventurous beginner/intermediate. Knowledge of bias binding is recommended.
Time: Testers completed this pattern between 6 and 15 hours. Perfect as a weekend project!

Skill Level: Adventurous beginner/intermediate. Knowledge of bias binding is recommended.

Suggested fabrics: non stretch fabrics such cotton coutil herringbone, or simply cotton drill/duck. Feeling adventurous? The outer layer can be made with other non-stretch fabrics such as, upholstery tapestry, upholstery velvet, taffeta etc. Noting that choosing these fabrics will increase the difficulty of the sewing pattern.
Sizing: Made to be size inclusive.
Fits up to 163 cm / 64.2 inch bust and 149 cm / 58.7 inch waist, and down to a 74 cm / 29.1 inch bust and 62 cm / 24.4 inch waist.
See size chart below. Instructions included to find your Atelier Arden size (sizing chart labels sizes from A - V rather than numbers)
You will determine your size based on your snug waist and bust measurement. For this pattern we have added 3 bust sizes for each waist size, making a total of 66 size options. Note Petite & Classic bust are usually paired together in a file. Fuller bust is usually in it’s own file.
It is essential that you choose a size smaller than your snug body measurements.
Choose a size that is up to 5 cm smaller than your snug waist measurement. The lacing of the stays allows for some flexibility, and in order to have a firm fit, please size down up to 1 size. If you are plus size, it may be worth sizing down 2 sizes for a firm fit and a lacing gap.
Bodies can be so wildly different from one another. Instructions included to alter the pattern for a longer or shorter torso, and fit recommendations and solutions are included in the written instruction booklet.
This pattern was made and tested by humans, and not AI.
